Find the leak before you open the wall

The worst leaks are the ones you can't see. A bill that jumped for no reason, a warm spot on the floor, the sound of water running when nothing is on: those all point at a hidden leak, and finding it precisely is what leak detection is for.
What are the signs?
- Water bill climbed and nothing changed in how you use water
- Meter spins with every fixture off. That's the easiest test: check the meter, don't run water for an hour, check it again
- Warm or damp spots on floors, which on a slab usually means a hot line leaking underneath
- Running-water sound in the walls or under the floor
- Musty smell or new cracks near the foundation
How do they find it?
Without guessing. Pros use listening equipment, pressure isolation, and sometimes thermal imaging to pinpoint where the line is leaking before any concrete or drywall comes out. The difference between "the leak is here" and "we'll open the wall and look" is the difference between paying once for certainty and paying for a demolition hunt.
What happens after they find it?
You get the repair options, usually a spot repair or a reroute depending on where it is and what shape the pipe is in. On a house with old galvanized or a history of pinhole leaks, sometimes the honest answer is a repipe conversation instead of the fourth spot repair.
